In a significant development for the mobile computing sector, Micron has begun shipping qualification samples of its innovative 1γ-based LPDDR5X memory. This memory is specifically designed to enhance AI applications on mobile devices, offering high speeds and power efficiency. With a speed grade of 10.7 Gbps and up to 20% power savings compared to previous models, Micron’s LPDDR5X aims to provide smartphone users with faster performance and extended battery life, especially for data-intensive tasks like AI-driven processes.
Micron’s engineers have managed to reduce the package size of the LPDDR5X, creating the thinnest package in the industry at 0.61 millimeters for the 8GB and 16GB 1γ-based LPDDR5X 496-ball packages. This compact form factor is ideal for slim or foldable smartphone designs, catering to the evolving trends in mobile device aesthetics and functionality.
Mark Montierth, corporate VP and GM of Micron’s Mobile and Client Business Unit, emphasized the transformative impact of the 1γ-based LPDDR5X memory on the mobile industry. He highlighted the technology’s exceptional speed, power efficiency, and thin package design as key factors driving innovation in smartphone development, promising enhanced user experiences.
Performance tests conducted by Micron revealed significant improvements in mobile AI response times with the 1γ LPDDR5X memory. Comparing the 10.7 Gbps bandwidth of 1γ to the 7.5 Gbps bandwidth of 1β LPDDR5X, response times were notably faster across various AI-driven tasks, such as location-based recommendations, language translation, and personalized recommendations.
Notably, this marks Micron’s first mobile solution to utilize advanced EUV lithography, building on the company’s previous advancements in DDR5 memory technology for data center and client applications. The optimized 1γ DRAM node incorporates cutting-edge CMOS technologies for enhanced transistor performance and leverages EUV lithography for increased bit density.
Currently, Micron is offering sampling of 16GB 1γ-based LPDDR5X products to select partners, with plans to introduce a range of capacities from 8GB to 32GB for flagship smartphones in 2026. This strategic move underscores Micron’s commitment to driving innovation in mobile technology and empowering partners to deliver cutting-edge mobile experiences to consumers.
The introduction of the 1γ-based LPDDR5X memory by Micron reflects the ongoing evolution of computer technology, particularly in the mobile sector. As AI applications continue to proliferate in smartphones, the demand for high-speed, power-efficient memory solutions is on the rise. Micron’s latest offering addresses these demands, setting a new standard for mobile memory performance and efficiency.
