Teens’ engagement with social media platforms has seen significant shifts in recent years, according to a Pew Research Center study. TikTok has emerged as a leading platform for American teenagers, with a substantial number using it almost constantly. In contrast, Facebook’s popularity among teens has declined sharply since the Center’s previous survey in 2014-15.
YouTube remains the most widely used online platform among teens, followed by TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. The study highlights the changing preferences of teens, with growing usage of Instagram and Snapchat, while platforms like Twitter and Tumblr have experienced a decline in teen users.
Differences in social media usage are observed across demographics, with variations based on gender and race. Teen boys tend to gravitate towards platforms like YouTube and Reddit, while girls are more inclined towards TikTok and Instagram. Black and Hispanic teens show higher usage rates for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp compared to White teens.
The study delves into the frequency of teen engagement with online platforms, revealing that a significant portion of teens are almost constantly using platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. It also explores teens’ perceptions of their social media usage, with a majority feeling they spend an appropriate amount of time on these platforms.
Access to digital devices among teens has increased over the years, with smartphones being the most prevalent, followed by desktop or laptop computers and gaming consoles. Disparities in device access are noted across age groups and household income levels, reflecting digital divides in society.
Teens’ internet usage has become more frequent, with a vast majority accessing the internet daily. Notably, Black and Hispanic teens are more likely to be online almost constantly compared to White teens. Older teens, particularly those aged 15 to 17, show higher rates of almost constant internet use.
Overall, the research sheds light on the evolving landscape of social media and technology use among teens, emphasizing the importance of understanding these trends to navigate the digital world effectively.
