Fujitsu’s Tape Drive Revolution: Storing 1PB Data by 2035

Fujitsu is set to revolutionize the storage industry by cramming a whopping 1PB of data into a single tape drive by the year 2035. This ambitious goal, equivalent to 2.5PB of compressed data, far surpasses the current 30TB storage capacity of average tape drives. Despite the rise of newer storage technologies, a significant portion of the world’s data remains stored on tape cartridges in data centers, a trend expected to persist. The linear tape open (LTO) format, specifically LTO-8, is widely utilized in data centers today, offering over 30TB of storage and high data transfer rates.

Fujifilm recently unveiled its 15-year roadmap for tape storage, introducing innovative materials and magnetic recording techniques to enhance storage capacities. The company’s roadmap includes plans for 1TB cartridges featuring advanced materials and a novel magnetic recording method. Current tape technologies utilize Barium Ferrite magnetic particles, enabling storage of up to 30TB of data. However, Fujifilm, in collaboration with IBM, revealed a new Strontium Ferrite technology that could potentially increase storage capacities to 580TB by 2029.

Looking ahead, Fujifilm aims to leverage epsilon iron oxide nanoparticles in their tapes, referred to as Epsilon Ferrite, to achieve even higher storage densities. This approach involves employing a magnetic recording method known as focused-millimeter-wave-assisted magnetic recording (F-MIMR), utilizing terahertz light to enhance recording density and capacity. F-MIMR not only boosts recording speeds significantly but also promises a substantial leap in data writing efficiency compared to conventional methods.
