Research Technology Services (ResTech) at UNSW manages shared high-performance computing and data platforms, providing researchers with access to computation, technical expertise, in-project software engineering, and training. The services aim to simplify and secure data collection, storage, sharing, and management. These resources cater not only to UNSW researchers but also extend to external researchers, government, and industry users through collaborations and partnerships.
ResTech oversees the UNSW Research Data Archive platform and the Digital Health Hub in the Randwick Health & Innovation precinct, offering services such as access to high-performance computing, data storage, handling, management, researcher training, seminars, events, and National Research Infrastructure. The computing resources feature advanced CPU/GPU cores, including supercomputers like Katana, Gadi, and Pawsey, supporting parallel processing workloads and various research projects.
Katana, a shared computational cluster on the Kensington campus, boasts over 8,000 CPU cores, GPU nodes, and substantial disk storage capacity. Gadi and Pawsey, Australia’s fastest supercomputers, are accessible to UNSW staff and postgraduate students, providing significant support for cutting-edge research endeavors. These computing resources are allocated based on service units to researchers through different schemes.
On the data front, ResTech offers platforms and tools to facilitate data collection, storage, sharing, visualization, and management securely and efficiently. These include ERICA for secure cloud computing infrastructure, REDCap for secure survey and data capture, eNotebook for digital collaboration, ResToolkit for Research Data Management Plans, and various data storage tools compliant with Australian regulations. The UNSW Data Archive provides long-term data management and storage solutions for research staff and students, ensuring security and accessibility.
The research community partnering program at ResTech delivers technical training courses to enhance the skills of UNSW researchers and industry collaborators. Leveraging expertise from various UNSW faculties, schools, and centers, ResTech organizes workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. By engaging with National Infrastructure providers, vendors, and industry partners, ResTech aligns its training and events with current trends and demands in the field.
ResTech welcomes partnerships for tailored computing and data solutions, offering general enquiries and specific points of contact for high-performance computing, data management, and community partnering. With a commitment to advancing research through technology, ResTech’s services play a vital role in supporting innovative and impactful research endeavors at UNSW and beyond.
