Imation Announces Availability of SLR75 Tape Cartridges

Cartridges Meet Increased Storage Requirements of Small & Mid-sized Businesses

SYDNEY, Aust. (Sep. 16, 2003)— Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, today announced the availability of its new SLR75 tape cartridges in support of Tandberg Data’s recent launch of its SLR75 tape drives. The new tape cartridges, which feature a storage capacity of up to 75GB and a transfer rate of 8MB per second, furthers Imation’s commitment to provide high-quality tape media products that meet the increasing data retention requirements of the fast-growing small and mid-sized business server market.

"The storage demands of small and mid-sized companies are growing exponentially as companies place more emphasis on data backup, disaster recover, and long-term archival," said Douglas Gourley, Managing Director, Imation ANZ. "The new SLR75 tape cartridges will help this market better manage their growing storage requirements by providing a more cost-effective and reliable solution at a capacity point that meets their needs."

Imation SLR75 tape cartridges store 38GB native and 75GB of compressed data and feature a 4MB per second native and 8MB per second compressed transfer rate (capacity and transfer rate assume 2:1 data compression), with average file access time less than 68 seconds. Tandberg Data's SLR75 drives also have backward read capabilities with SLR100, SLR75, SLR60, SLR50, SLR40, SLR24, SLR7 and SLR5 tape cartridges for simplified file and media migration.

"Tandberg Data's SLR tape drives and Imation's SLR media provides a highly reliable, scalable storage solution for data backup, file transfer and archiving which provides a lower cost of ownership for small to medium sized businesses," said Jack Robinson, director, strategic OEM sales and business development, Tandberg Data. "With SLR75, we are answering our customers' need for a proven technology which provides higher capacity, performance and future growth at an extremely affordable price"

SLR (Scalable Linear Recording) tape technology is more reliable than similar technologies due to its field failure rate of less than 2 percent. Imation SLR tape cartridges are based on linear recording to provide significant reliability over traditional helical drives and media. The SLR tape path is contained completely within the cartridge, minimizing tape stress, ensuring data integrity and increasing cartridge reliability. Plus, the read-while-write capability of SLR media cuts the time it takes to backup in half. SLR technology was developed to provide high capacity, fast performance and a strong migration path compared to legacy DAT/DDS technologies.

"Small and mid-sized businesses typically are reluctant to make large investments in their IT operations, and tend to invest in technologies that not only meet their demands today, but can also grow along with their business," said Dianne McAdam, senior analyst and partner, Data Mobility Group. "Tape technologies such as SLR that are not only affordable and reliable, but also scalable and backward compatible, provide small and mid-sized businesses with the best possible solution to backing up and protecting their data."

Imation SLR tape cartridges are based on MP (metal particulate) technology. At Imation’s research facility, located in Oakdale, Minn., Imation continues to advance the development of MP media capacity, read/write speeds and pilot production designs that are implemented throughout the company’s manufacturing sites. Imation recently invested $49 million in its Weatherford, Okla. plant to develop advanced media coating capabilities that will allow Imation to advance its MP manufacturing competencies across multiple formats, including SLR, for next generation data storage tape products.

Imation branded SLR75 tape cartridges are now available through Imation qualified distributors and resellers. For more information on SLR technology, visit www.imation.com/slr.
